The story of how Facebook began appears to be as compelling as spending hours trolling the site's pages. "The Social Network," Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher's tale of how the dot-com empire came to prominence, landed at the top of the box office during its debut weekend. Driven by performances from Jesse Eisenberg and pop-chart king Justin Timberlake, the flick, which also ruled the Friday box office, raked in $23 million.
The animated fantasy "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" turned out a strong Saturday night showing, soaring to second place after coming in third on Friday. The family-friendly, CG-packed adventure about warring owl kingdoms rang up roughly $10.9 million in ticket sales over the weekend. The film's total estimated tally stands at about $30 million.
Oliver Stone's stock-market drama "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" took box-office bronze during its sophomore weekend on screens. The film, which thrusts banking bad guy Gordon Gekko (played by Michael Douglas) back into the paper-chasing game with his daughter's fiancé Jacob (Shia LaBeouf) in tow, pulled in $10.1 million. The weekend numbers bring the movie's two-week total to nearly $36 million.
In a tight box-office race, "The Town" is close behind "Wall Street" with $10 million. The heist film, featuring Ben Affleck (who also directs), Blake Lively and Jon Hamm, has made just over $64.3 million since hitting theaters in September.
"Easy A" rounds out the weekend's top-five money-makers with $7 million. The estimated weekend haul nudges the high-school flick's haul to over $42 million.
